This thesis painting was submitted for a MFA degree at the University of Cincinnati (School of Fine Arts). It is a self portrait by artist Scattergood-Moore aka Gene Arthur Scattergood. The painting was a tribute to the liberal/intellectual east coast Scattergood had left to attend graduate school in conservative Cincinnati. The painting was also meant to be a homage to Max Beckman - especially his "Self-Portrait in Tuxedo" 1927, oil on canvas, in the collection of the Busch-Reisinger Museum, Harvard University Art Museum, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Scattergood, like Beckmann in St. Louis, felt alienated in the racially-troubled city of Cincinnati

and the anti-intellectual atmosphere at the University of Cincinnati of the mid-1960s . . . although he remembers with great fondness a few classmates from the University of Cincinnati, his landlord in Mt Adams, Herbert Barnett (1910-1972) at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, and Professor Joseph Gutmann (1923-2004) from Hebrew Union College.

My wife, two daughters and I, along with "Molly" our Irish Setter, spent a number of summers at White Point, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia in a small cabin built by our neighbor and my friend, Frank Fritzgerald, a local fisherman in his 80's. Frank, who was illiterate, could recite the epic poems of Robert Burns in a voice worthy of Richard Burton; he brought education to this small poor fishing village and out-lived his three wives - the latter had read poems to Frank. He was a wise and honorable man - the closest I came to having a grandfather figure.
