William Lincoln Bates (1855-1932): Dr. William L. Bates was born as William Henry Carr - his mother Lucenia Howland died in 1857 and his dad Benjamin S. Carr was institutionalized and then died in 1883. He was adopted at the age of seven years by a relative Hannah Fowler Carr and her husband John Bates, who legally changed his name to William Lincoln Bates. Dr. Bates was a practicing physician in Providence and Jamestown and proprietor of the Bates Sanitarium "Maplewood" in Jamestown for 40 years. He was a specialist in Electropathy, which became controversial. He was twice married twice: Rebecca Jane Lowie/Lewin and Dr. Martha Boyce Bates. Dr. William Lincoln Bates, died in 1932. After his death his wife became president and medical director of Bates Sanitarium and his son, William Penn Bates, became manager.

William Lincoln Bates met Rebecca Josephine Lewin (Rebecca Jane Lowie/Lewin) in the Providence Reform School, Providence, RI. He was there for larceny and Rebecca for vagrancy. After three years William was declared "reformed" and was discharged on April 4, 1876; six months after his release he married Rebecca Lewin. They had two children - Carrie and Willie. They divorced in 1884. During 1886, Rebecca married John Joseph Scattergood in Boston - later they divorced and Rebecca traveled west. John Joseph raised Rebecca's daughter Carrie - who call him "Papa." William Lincoln Bates raised his son Willie.

Carrie: Kathryn L. Bates aka Carrie Crouchley (1877-1964) began her career in films at the age of 59; she had 12 small roles - mostly uncredited - as school teachers, tourists, or little old ladies. Her biggest role was that of a committee woman in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) directed by Frank Capa; starring James Stewart and Jean Arthur.
Kathryn Bates is on the right of this still from Girl of the Ozarks (1936) with Elizabeth Russell, Russell Simpson and Lois Kent. Carrie Crouchley died on January 1st 1964, at the age of 86.

Willie: William Penn Bates (1879-1956) - married Blanch Baldwin (Moore) Bates (1886-1953). They had a daughter, Margaret Ingham Bates, born 1911 in California.
